Key Takeaways

  • Safety First: Regular sanding restores slip resistance, meeting vital UK safety standards for school sports.
  • Equipment: We use the Bona Flexisand with a multi-disc drive for a perfectly flat, competition-ready surface.
  • Finish: Junckers HP Sport is the industry standard for durability and traction in high-traffic halls.
  • Maintenance: Phased refurbishment during school holidays ensures zero disruption to the academic calendar.

The High-Stakes World of School Flooring

A school sports hall is more than just a room; it’s a multi-purpose hub for PE, exams, and community events. However, high-traffic use quickly takes its toll on maple or Granwood surfaces. Over time, the protective lacquer wears away, leaving the timber vulnerable to moisture and ground-in dirt. More importantly, the floor loses its ‘grip,’ becoming a slip hazard for students and athletes.

The agitation of a neglected sports floor goes beyond aesthetics. Fading line markings lead to confusion during competitive games, and a dull, scratched surface reflects light poorly, making the environment feel dingy and uninspiring. For Surrey school governors and facility managers, the risk of a student injury due to a slippery floor is a significant liability that cannot be ignored.

The solution is a professional refurbishment that restores the floor to its original performance levels. Using specialised dust-free machinery and competition-grade finishes, we can extend the life of a sports floor by decades, saving the school the astronomical cost of a full replacement while ensuring a safe, professional environment for all users.

Sanding Maple vs Granwood: Technical Challenges

In Surrey, we encounter two main types of sports flooring: Maple and Granwood. Maple is a traditional hardwood that requires a delicate but firm sanding progression (36, 50, 80, 100). We use the Lagler Hummel for the initial heavy cuts, but we finish with the Bona Flexisand. The Flexisand’s multi-disc drive allows for multi-directional sanding, which is essential for removing any ‘stop marks’ and achieving the ultra-flat surface required for high-level sport.

Granwood, a composite of sawdust, cement, and linseed oil, requires a different approach. It is much harder and more abrasive than natural timber. We use specialised diamond-tipped abrasives for Granwood to ensure we can cut through the existing seal without overheating the material. Regardless of the material, our dust-extraction systems ensure that no fine particles escape into the hall, protecting the school’s ventilation systems and the health of our tradesmen.

Precision Line Marking Restoration

Once the floor is sanded to raw timber, we apply the first coat of primer. This is the critical window for line marking. Using precision tapes and high-pigment sports paints, we reinstate markings for basketball, netball, badminton, and five-a-side football. Every line must be accurate to within millimetres to comply with Sport England standards. Once the paint is dry, the final coats of lacquer are applied over the top, ‘locking in’ the lines so they never peel or wear away.

The Gold Standard: Junckers HP Sport

For the final seal, we exclusively use Junckers HP Sport. This two-component water-borne lacquer is specifically engineered for sports halls. It provides the perfect balance of traction and ‘slide’—essential for preventing knee and ankle injuries. It is also exceptionally durable, designed to withstand the abrasive nature of indoor trainers and the weight of portable seating units during exams.

We typically apply 2-3 coats of HP Sport, with each coat requiring a specific curing time determined by the hall’s humidity and temperature. Our project managers coordinate these works during school holidays to ensure the hall is ready for the first day of term.
